Large Fibroids And Hysterectomy
Alternatives to a hysterectomy?
My mom is 44 years old and she was in pretty good health until recently. She has fibroids and they are large. She didn't know she had them until she went to the doctor. I can touch her stomach and actually feel them. She was always tired and she bled heavily when she had her cycle. She finally went to the doctor a few weeks ago, and she lost so much blood that she was at risk for a heart attack and/or stroke, and she was kept for a day in order to receive some blood. Her doctor told her that she should get a hysterectomy, and I think my mom is going to go through with it, but I'm very afraid and I don't want her to have it. She told me she won't be having any more children, and her fibroids may come back, so she wants to have the hysterectomy to keep the fibroids from returning. I know I can't tell her what to do with her body, but I'm really afraid for her to have surgery. What are some alternatives to a hysterectomy? Your answers are greatly appreciated =)
I had a hysterectomy and I would give anything if I hadn't. I was 44 years old too and had fibroids. A hysterectomy puts your body immediately into what is called surgical menopause (unnatural menopause due to the surgery). I felt so terrible and the hot flashes were unbearable. So I did get rid of my periods but my body took on a whole other set of health problems because of the surgery, and I learned later that fibroids eventually dry up and disappear.
I have been reading and learning about virgin coconut oil and it has many health benefits. It's suppose to be good for female problems too. Maybe your mom could try it for a couple of weeks to see if it helps. (You are suppose to take 1-3 spoonfuls a day) But if your mom has the surgery I think she'll be alright. It's a very routine surgery. You sound like a sweet daughter and I sincerely hope it goes well for your mom.
Endometriosis Part 58 - What is Abdominal Hysterectomy ??
As we mentioned in previous articles during the last stage of the menstrual cycle normally a layer of endometriosis lining in the inside of the uterus is expelled, known as menstruation blood but instead some of the endometriosis tissues grow somewhere in the body causing endometriosis. Endometriosis also reacts to hormonal signals of the monthly menstrual cycle, building up tissue, breaking it, and eliminating it through the menstrual period. If all other treatments have failed to treat your endometriosis located at the abdomen or they have become malignant, then abdominal hysterectomy may be necessary. In this article, we will discuss what is abdominal hysterectomy?
I. Definition
Abdominal hysterectomy is a surgical procedure used to remove the tubes, cervix through the abdomen via a surgical horizontal or vertical incision.
II. How it works
There are 2 types of incisions in this operation
a) Horizontal incision
Horizontal incision provide better cosmetic result, because the scar is small but dose not provide your doctor a clear visual assessment of the abdominal cavity.
b) Vertical incision
Most of the time, if there are large fibroid or extensive endometriosis or cancer and your surgeon want to have clear view at the abdominal cavity to see if cancer has been spread then the vertical incision is necessary.
After making incision through the skin, fat, fascia and muscles of the abdominal wall, the uterus and cervix are separated from other tissues. Then, the blood vessels supplying blood to the uterus and cervix are clamped, once all the attachments and blood vessels have been separated from the uterus and cervix, the uterus and cervix are removed. After the abdominal cavity has been carefully inspected, each layer is sutured back.
III. Risks
a) Infection of the incision area.
b) Urinary infection caused by medical instrument that may damages to the bladder during operation, such as blood in urine, pelvic pain, fever, etc.
c) Excessive bleeding during and after operation
d) Abdominal hysterectomy increases the risk of developing blood clots in the deep veins of the leg or lung.
e) Early menopause
It is caused by interruption of blood flow to the ovaries as a result of removing the uterus.
