Lupron Fibroids

I will be having a hystectomy with repair of a cystocele & rectocele. What can I expect?

Twenty-two years ago I had my first baby 12 lbs 12 oz. I had 4th degree lacerations with an episiotomy. Two years later came another one at 10 lbs 12 oz. Three years after that came my last child at 11 lbs 4 oz. Both of these had 3rd degree lacerations. Needless to say I am now 43 years old and the damage has caught up with me. Add to that three uterine fibroids that have nearly capaciated me 2-3 days per month. I'm a bit nervous and I'm typically not a nervous person but this really seems like a huge surgery. Anybody out there go through anything similar? I was hoping for a vaginal hysterectomy but my uterus is 14 weeks sized and we're not sure if that it going to be possible. We're trying to shrink it with Depo Lupron but the docs aren't sure if it will shrink enough. I'l looking forward hearing from as many people as possible.

First of all, OW! Almost 13 pounds!
Second: Well, I recommend just to being sure you're only getting your uterus out. Don't get your ovaries out too. Often doctors will encourage that, or women won't be sure exactly what they're getting out. But there are a lot of complications that can arise from someone your age going into surgical menopause. The surgery will go a lot easier if you don't have to have that additional complication. See: http://www.reuters.com/article/healthNews/idUSKRA98046720070829 for a description of a few of the problems associated with surgical menopause.
As for the hysterectomy itself: hard to say. Some women are really really happy afterwards, as it eliminates the problems they'd had. Others have some compliations, like pelvic floor muscle problems. But it sounds to me like your problems are bad enough that it will only be better afterwards. Good luck!
