Myomectomy or Hysterectomy for uterine fibroid?

I have been diagnosed with intramural, subserous fibroid, in the left adnexa, continuous with the uterine wall - size 5.9cms. Should I go for myomectomy or hysterectomy. I am 40yrs old

This is a decision that depends on several factors.

I will have to assume.

You are 40 years old so I am assuming you do not wish to have further children, if so, then the answer is obvious.. Myomectomy. Though, if you are through with your child bearing years, then either will eliminate your fibroids.

The difference? One you keep the uterus, the other you don't.

I am actually in favor of keeping a healthy uterine lining,.. if you have any signs of endometriosis or other pre-cancerous growths,.. then it would be best to just go for the Hysterectomy.

The myomectomy can be argued to be slightly less risky, but only by a small margin.

In your specific case, I would think the most prudent situation would be to go for the full hysterectomy given the location of your fibroid.

However, there are other less invasive treatments that may fit your situation well, and I would encourage you to look into them:

Specifically I am referring to the Exablate technique. Research it , you can start with the site above and if you feel it is something you are interested in, discuss it with your doctor(s). You may have to talk to a few or get second opinions due to the relatively novelty of the procedure.

All the best.
